Nur Azlina is a self-taught young artist who specialises in abstract painting using acrylic and mixed media on canvas. Her paintings are each unique and created from inspirations based on her life experiences, using various techniques to enable viewers to appreciate and interpret her paintings in their own way.

Lina’s artistic skill was developed by her father, En.Zulkafli Abd.Aziz, who is a bank manager and an art lover. Since her school days, her father has exposed her to pastel and water colour paintings and has shown her different techniques to draw lines. Apart from that, he also gave her total freedom in doing what she wanted when working on paper.

“My father wanted me to be happy and he believed happiness can only be achieved by doing things that you love. Art is what my father believed to be one of these ways. My fondest childhood memories are of when my father hugged and held my hand to draw and paint” says Lina happily.

Lina’s painting skills were further developed when she was away from her family while in boarding school and university.   In her free time, she would paint out of her new experiences.  Her paintings reflected the new friends she made, different cultures she experienced and new places she visited.

Since she was young, Lina’s love of art and nature could clearly be seen, especially when she started singing, composing her own songs, playing musical instruments and creating her own bags and clothing. This passion and talent made her believe that she was a natural artist, something which might have been inherited from her mother, also an art lover. However Lina never did any formal art education after her high school, because her father was very practical and discouraged her from being an artist, as he felt that painting was a kind of hobby and not a practical way to earn a living. Lina took his advice and went to university, majoring in insurance and business studies.

After completing her studies, she continued her interest in art by working with one of the well-known beauty product lines as an advisor to the salon and appearing as a model in a few local magazines. Soon after that, a new chapter of Lina’s life started which lifted her spirits up as an artist, when she finally got married to a man who gave her full support and understanding in her career in art.  Her husband built a studio for her at their home where she could paint, display and store her work.  Her paintings are hung throughout  their home.

Later, Lina heeded her call to art and learned the basic rudiments of drawing and composition from her mentor, Abstract Expressionist painter Suzlee Ibrahim, at Shah Alam Gallery.  Apart from learning the technical aspects of painting from her mentor, Lina developed her skills by interacting and exchanging ideas with other artists.

Lina always remembers that her mentor advised her that

“As an artist, you are like a cook. Whenever you feel that your painting is done, it is done. Never add a single line, otherwise your painting will be over-cooked”.

Lina explains that

“I treat painting as a meditation. I paint as I feel. Whenever I have some kind of different feelings and emotion, I will immediately put those feelings on canvas.” Lina’s expressionist works are thought-provoking and influenced by the emotions and events of the moment. Her paintings reflect a combination of harmony, romance and grace, evoking a vision of spiritual enlightenment. They also portray an insight into her love and passion for our daily realisation of the hidden beauty and happiness of life. She believes that sometimes as an artist, one has to learn to paint with a child-like attitude without worrying too much about the results and to just enjoy the experience of painting. Sometimes when Lina get desperate to paint and has no materials with her at that time, she will use pencil or charcoal to express herself. Most of the time, the results really surprise her.

“Often, I derive my inspiration from my traveling experiences, from studying other countries’ cultures and viewing other artists’ work. I can spend hours looking at another artist’s painting for I am studying not only the painting itself but the thought and the message behind the painting. Since I had no formal art education, I have to put in more work than other artists. I analyse my work and whenever I have doubt or questions, I go to a gallery to find answers or to talk with my mentor or other experienced artists”, says Lina.

“All my artworks are abstract expressions which reflect my life experiences. If I was asked to change my work just to suit the demand of the market, I would be doing what others want but not what I want.  Ultimately it would defeat the whole purpose of being an artist, which is to be happy and paint whatever I want, without any limitations and boundaries”, explains Lina.

“In my paintings, I want to share my thoughts and messages. I truly hope my art patrons will benefit from my paintings and be encouraged by the positive message behind every one. My paintings are unique as they are not commercial and every single painting is from my heart. Each of them is individually designed and created, based upon my life experiences, painted with techniques which include brushes, palette knives and my hands and fingers, which give each of my paintings a different texture and mood.  Most of the time I make sure that I offer a wide choice of paintings so that buyers can look at all my paintings until, hopefully, they find the particular painting which can communicate to them”, says Lina.

With Lina’s coming exhibition from 1^st August to 12^th August 2010 at TMS Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, she hopes the public can enjoy her paintings, will be inspired by the message behind them and support her as a young artist so that she can continue her wonderful yet challenging journey.

The drawings of the talented children, aged between four and 20, are up for sale at RM200 each.

The paintings are exhibited at the TMS Art Gallery in Taman Melawati in Kuala Lumpur.

Proceeds from the sale of the paintings will go to the Kiwanis Down’s Syndrome Foundation Malaysia and the ‘Have a Heart’ Club, of which the children are members.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat officially launched the art exhibition recently.

“Christmas is a time of giving and love, thus doing charity during this special time of the year is meaningful,” he said, adding that the idea of doing charity should be a sustainable effort.

He encouraged other organisations to emulate TMS Art Gallery in promoting charity work.

Later, Ong, who is also MCA president, made a personal donation of RM10,000 to the foundation and the club.

The exhibition, which began on Nov 12, will be held until Jan 10 from 10am to 6pm daily, except on Sundays.

3. Josephine Lam

Batik designer, Josephine Lam is the winner of various batik competitions in Malaysia. Josephine’s design meet today’s demands for creativity, and one-of-a-kind concepts- young, trendy and sophisticated. Josephine’s designs are available at TMS ART CENTRE Kuala Lumpur.

Batik Artists

1. Artist Emilia Tan

Emilia Tan, was born in 1981 in the state of Selangor. In vivid colors and organic abstraction of form, she brings together the traditional arts of Malaysia batik and Australia aboriginal design, as well as the contemporary arts of impressionism and abstract painting. Emilia was introduced to the art of batik while studying textile and fashion design at the Malaysia Institute of Art. She developed a strong interest in this art of rich, multi-layered surfaces and “lost and found edges.” In a complex process of trial and error, Emilia’s layers colour upon colour, material upon material, using wax and dyes to create luminous images of great depth and mystery. The drips and pools of colour in Emilia’s dream- like imageries are the mark of an unpredictable medium; yet she maintains a superb balance of design, fluidity of movement and expressiveness of form. With spontaneity of emotion, the shapes in Emilia’s works are in continual motion, sweeping upward in vigorous ascent, or falling brightly in delicate descent. “Art is an expression of your own vision, “ says Emilia, “and eventually you will make up your own rules.”

2. Artist GM Choo

G. M. Choo is no stranger to the world of Batik. Choo had a great interest in art since his childhood days and harboured the dream of accomplishing great achievement in the field of art. He never stopped painting since then and after 30 years, his dream became a reality following the establishment of GM CHOO ART GALLERY, Malacca. His mission is to promote Malaysian culture and tourism abroad through his artistic journey. With his inborn artistic talents and skills, Choo easily expresses his love of nature by putting fishes, mountain, river, rocks into pieces of batik. Choo has been involved in this field for over 40 years and continues to dazzle local and international visitors. His painting techniques which are considered priceless, make him stand in a class of his own.

3. Artist Padil Osman

Padil Osman was born in the state of Kelantan in 1976. Padil grew up with nature, culture and art. His interest in batik painting came at a very young age, from a boy’s interest in batik to a successful batik artist. What better way to learn about batik than from his roots? He expresses his talents by observing the lush, rich culture of art and batik in Kelantan. His works epitomize the Taste of East Coast (the style of the Malay Kampong), focusing notably on the “Wau” (kite), fighting rooster, flora and fauna. Not only does he use canting (batik tulis) but he is also equally adaptable with the cracking technique, gutta.

4. Artist Mohd Hamdan Hasmadi B. Husain

Mohd Hamdan was born in the state of Kelantan in 1973. He has 15 years of experience in the batik industry. His Batik works are mostly inspired by natural scenery of seaside, the tropical forest of Malaysia using the technique of double – triple layer. Using a rainbow colour combination to create a unique harmony, Mohd Hamdan creates an exclusive and contemporary style that portray a unique Malaysia.

5. Artist Rosliza bt. Hj Muhammad

Winner of numerous batik competitions in Malaysia, Rosliza set off her artistic journey since her studies in UITM Malaysia, where she took up Textile courses under Professor Sulaiman Ghani in 1989. Rosliza was born in Kota Bharu and based her career in Batik in Kota Bharu where she runs her own boutique and becomes the mother of 4 children. Rosliza’s batiks are very much influenced by her surrounding: green sceneries and flowery tropical life in Malaysia.

6. Artist Ibrahim bin Omar

Ibrahim aged 60, is a famous batik block print and hand drawn artist in Terengganu. He runs his own batik workshop next to his house, with his wife. His batik strokes portray vivid colours layers by layers. Over 40 years in the Batik industry, his batik art pieces are valuable for collecting purposes.

7. Artist Lim Anuar

Born in year 1977, Lim Anuar was a deaf artist since the age of 18. Lim Anuar studied batik during his school time in Penang. His painting style is very much influenced by his childhood life. Currently Lim Anuar is working as an art director under the Business department at Lim Kok Wing University of Creative Technology in Malaysia.

Each person will be given Fabric, framed and pre-drawn with some batik basic motifs. Participants just play and have fun and experimenting with batik paints. Very safe and have no danger from burn the hot wax. There will be no fire involved.
